Coping with Grief in Islam | Recapping the Moment

On October 25th, 2025, the Shifa Institute and the Institute for Muslim Mental Health collaborated to host a mental health talk, “Coping with Grief in Islam”, featuring Dr. Omar Reda. Dr. Reda is a skilled psychiatrist who shared insight on how to utilize Islamic teachings and our communities to promote personal growth and cope with trauma and grief.

During the discussion, Dr. Reda shared meaningful insights on the importance of using our power to create spaces that support others. When we create welcoming spaces and uplift each other, we enable people to feel safe and seen. Additionally, Dr. Reda discussed how compassion and service, not only to oneself but to others, are very important skills. These skills can help avoid imposing assumptions about people’s grief, trauma, and experiences. Through this mindful act, we can carry one another when dealing with life’s challenging circumstances.

As a community, through compassion and support, we should strive to support our brothers and sisters during their grief. Dr. Reda emphasized that grief is a collective experience felt by all. Grief can highlight our humanity, and we can heal with the help of our relationships formed within the community. To learn more about navigating grief and trauma, the Healing Trauma Institute hosts programs and camps that welcome space for reflection, restoration, and forming meaningful connections.
